Sweet potato energy for Starbucks store
Starbucks and Japanese shochu brewery Kirishima Shuzo have opened a store that runs entirely on energy from sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are used in the production of Japanese Shochu alcohol and the resulting waste, such as residue and potato waste, is fermented into biogas. The biogas generates electricity and heat to power the site. In addition, the waste heat from the distillation process is used for heating, and the remaining waste serves as fertilizer for the cultivation of sweet potatoes and coffee, creating a sustainable cycle.
