1.3 BILLION TONS! - This is how much edible food is thrown away worldwide every year. Depending on the source, it is 330kg/capita in Switzerland (WWF) and 140kg/capita in Germany (BmEL). Fortunately, there are various trends and ideas to reduce these completely absurd and above all avoidable quantities.

Less food waste thanks to artificial intelligence

Berlin-based start-up Freshflow has developed a forecasting platform that uses artificial intelligence to help retailers keep track of their product range. This should minimize unnecessary reordering and food waste and maximize revenues. Manual reordering of fresh produce is rooted in the need to be flexible to shelf life, quality variations and seasonality. The company hopes to avoid bad decisions by allowing AI to build probabilistic models and demand forecasts based on meaningful retail data.
